Green Lantern Commission Painting Stage 2

At this stage I want to see what is what so I use flat colors to separate all the objects. I’m using acrylics at this stage because I want this to dry fast so I can get started with the oil paints.

I plan to have a slight glow around the Green Lantern and Sinistro, but I had forgot while I was doing the background and had put the background upon part of the figuresuntil it hit me about the glow. That is why the glow around the figures look so strange.

Next I will add the oils to the background so watch out for that.

Green Lantern Commission Painting

Yesterday I mentioned that I got a commission to do a Green Lantern painting. The picture to the left is what the buyer wanted me to use as a model for the painting, but he wanted an outer space background so put together the composite you see below.

Below is my pencil sketch on the canvas. Next I will work on the flat colors to separate everything out. Watch for that on tomorrow’s post as I continue to show this Green Lantern painting in progress.

Alex Ross, Nuff Said

I think what I’m going to do is each week I will talk about a comic book artist I like. I want to start of with an artist I whose work I absolutely love and who is obviously who my comic book superhero paintings influenced by.

Alex Ross was the first to artist to breath life into comic book superheroes. People like Neal Adams and Gene Colan drew superheroes realistically, but Ross made them come alive, he made them real tangible people. His first “Marvels” cover made you wonder if it was somehow some trick photography done to make a man look like he was on fire to be the Human Torch.

Since then Ross has gone on to do some other great works. Kingdom Come, his covers for Astro City and his over sized books on Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Justice Leauge, all of which I have collected.

I must admit that Alex Ross was a big influence on me to do my superhero portraits, although there are other influences that affect my other comic book art and I will talk about them later.
